Lane Restrictions Set To Begin On Platt Bridge

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Lane restrictions are coming to the Platt Bridge starting Monday night as PennDot gets ready to repair the much traveled stretch of Route 291 that crosses the Schuylkill River.
The bridge is more than 60-years-old and bears the weight of an average 56-thousand vehicles every day. It's no wonder it's in need of repair.
Over the next two plus years, crews will repaint the entire bridge, repair the steel, and make improvements to both the deck and the approaches.
Drivers will have just one lane in each direction, so PennDot's Gene Blaum advises motorists to plan your alternate now.
"Such as I-95, or Bartram Ave / Essington Avenue, to Passyunk Avenue to the Schuylkill Expressway," said Blaum.
And while there could be significant delays for the duration of the work, Blaum said there's no way to get around doing it.
The work actually started months ago with little disruption to drivers.
All of this work costs 43-million-dollars - most of that coming from Uncle Sam.
