La Salle University Expands Varsity Sports Program With Water Polo, Golf

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- La Salle University is expanding it's varsity sports program with two sports that have previously been part of the college experience, but only as club teams.
Water polo for men and women and women's golf. Those are the new sports being offered at La Salle. And the University's Jaine Lucas says the goal is to increase enrollment by drawing students into those niche activities.
"We've had to date, over three dozen high school students from Philadelphia to California that have expressed interest in these new sports. We really looked at this as one way to support our enrollment strategy," said Lucas.
She says 200 high schools in the Mid-Atlantic Region offer men's water polo, and 175 offer women's water polo. But only 22 colleges offer men's water polo in Division 1, and only 32 colleges offer women's water polo nationwide. Lucas says scholarships will also be offered in each of the three new sports at La Salle.
