KYW Flashback: The Vet - Philadelphia's New Professional Sports Stadium
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- As KYW began broadcasting "All News - All the Time", the buzz around town was a new stadium for the Phillies and Eagles.
It was past due, but there was also a running battle over where to put it.
South Jersey was in the mix and so was 30th street. A South Philly site finally got the nod but everybody had their own idea of what it should be called.
It took four years from ground breaking to completion and was referred to only as, "that hole in the ground." But with the 1971 opening of Veterans Stadium , over 55,000 fans showed up to see Jim Bunning beat the Expos.
The Phils won the 1980 World Series there. But a new century brought new stadiums.
"The Vet," once again, became a hole in the ground.
