KYW Flashback: The Unemployment Woes Of 40 Years Ago Cycle Back Through Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It's amazing how many stories covered by KYW Newsradio over the past 50 years recycle themselves.
It was 40 years ago this week that we reported the stunning news that Philadelphia unemployment had grown to a staggering 10%. Subsequent years saw KYW business reporters revealing slowly increasing improvements, But by mid-2009, the Philadelphia story had reverted to that grim image in 1975.
At the time, drop in city employment reflected the dramatic migration of residents and business the suburbs.
In 2009 an ugly recession dominated the news and drove Philadelphian's from the workplace. But with a recent city resurgence - 2015 - the city has recorded some of the best employment numbers seen in a half a century.
