KYW Flashback: Police Corruption Probe Rocks The City
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was 1974 and the target was police corruption. KYW was first to reveal the findings of the Pennsylvania Crime Commission's secret multi-year investigation of the Philadelphia Police Department.
The report detailed payoffs and shakedowns involving hookers, gamblers, businesses and police at almost every rank. It noted one case of an immigrant peddler whose pushcart was trashed because he didn't pay.
But Mayor Frank Rizzo focused on just one entry, accusing officers of munching free meals at Gino's.
Rizzo challenged reporters to find justice in wrecking a career over a hamburger.
