CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- Students at the Showalter School in the city of Chester are putting five new laptop computers to good use in their college access center, thanks to a partnership between KYW Newsradio and the Crozer-Keystone Health System.
Showalter School 11th grader Ka'Lasha Towns (second from left), who is about to celebrate her 17th birthday, says having more computers will be a big help.
"It's just an amazing opportunity for our school to have more laptops," she said today.
Chester-Upland School District superintendent Gregory Shannon (second from right) noted today that computer literacy is a critical competency, especially for careers in the scientific and technical fields.
"The focus of the school is STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and math," he noted.
Ka'Lasha says she is just starting to pick out potential universities.
"I'm going to use this to look up scholarships, because I want to be a surgeon," she said.
Gwen Smith, president of nearby Springfield Hospital (far right), was delighted to hear about Towns' interest in the medical field.
"We're looking for people that live in the community to come back and work for us in our health system," Smith said.
KYW Newsradio used social media to help pick the winner for the computer lab giveaway.
