Key Making Goes High Tech In Philadelphia

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new key making company has set up kiosks in Philadelphia, and the technology goes a step beyond the standard locksmith.

The kiosks allow customers to set up an account and scan their keys of all shapes and sizes. In the event you get locked out of the house or lose the key to your mailbox, all you'd have to do is find a kiosk and print a new one.

Michael Harbolt with KeyMe says this is a secure solution to a common problem:

"Our kiosk requires a fingerprint to access scanned keys. Just like an ATM, all transactions at the kiosk are recorded to provide an additional layer of security."

He says they can even copy and make most car keys with transponders for less than it would cost to replace at a dealership.

There are currently kiosks set up at Rite-Aid locations in Center City, with more to come throughout the year.
