Kensington Police Making Good Use of Donated Off-Road Motorcycles

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police in the Kensington section of the city now have four extra wheels on the ground to help them fight crime.
Officers in the 24th District have two off-road motorcycles to help them patrol where squad cars can't go.
Charles Vogt, captain of the 24th District, says the dirt bikes were a $14,000 donation from local businesses through the Police District Advisory Council. He says they'll help officers to move through parks and along rail tracks.
Vogt says the vehicles went into service last week and paid off right away.
"A young man that was apparently possessing a gun in Kensington, the two officers responded and arrested that individual and recovered the weapon," he tells KYW Newsradio. "The very next night, the two officers assigned to those bikes made a narcotics arrest."
Vogt says the motorcycles are equipped with the Philadelphia police logo and flashing lights. He says other districts have had dirt bikes, but these are the first for the 24th.
