Keith Olbermann Suspended After Twitter Spat With Penn State Students
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- ESPN is suspending Keith Olbermann after he got into a Twitter-war with some Penn State students and alumni, which started with Tweets about the annual fundraiser "THON."
It started with a tweet to the ESPN show host with a link to a story about THON's fundraising efforts, with the line "We Are". Olbermann replied with a tweet that simply said "pitiful."
Olbermann began engaging users who called him out for criticizing the annual dance marathon, which this year brought in over $13-million dollars to fight childhood cancer.
One of his tweets read: "I'd like to thank the students and alums of Penn State for proving my point about the mediocrity of their education and ethics."
In a statement, ESPN calls the exchange "inappropriate," saying it does not reflect their views, and they say Olbermann realizes he was wrong and will not host his show for the rest of the week.
Olbermann apologized in a tweet, saying "I was stupid and childish and way less mature than the students there who did such a great fundraising job."
