Keeping The Animals Cool At The Philadelphia Zoo

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The heat isn't just tough on people, it's also tough on some animals at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Tammy Schmidt, who is the zoo's Curator of Carnivores, says the staff is doing what they can to keep animals safe and comfortable during the heat wave.

"We pretty much have the sprinklers going on everywhere for people and animals. The animals like snow leopards or polar bears, those are the animals that shy away from the sun like a vampire."

Schmidt adds that they've taken measures to make sure they give all the animals some relief.

"Even for heat-seeking, warm-loving animals, this is still a lot."

She says the zoo still has gotten a good amount of visitors during the heat wave and calls the people who ventured to the zoo on Saturday "hardcore champions of zoo supporters."
