Jury Deliberates Fate Of Admitted Philadelphia Cop Killer
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia jury is now considering the penalty -- life in prison or death by injection -- for admitted cop killer Rasheed Scruggs.
In closing arguments, prosecuctor Edward McCann told jurors that Scruggs committed an intentional, premeditated ambush of two police officers, killing officer John Pawlowski, and the death penalty is appropriate because Scruggs is an "evil, remorseless killer" of a police officer and the evidence and law supports it.
But the defense attorney has argued that Scruggs accepted responsibility and showed remorse by pleading guilty, and he implored the jury to show mercy and sentence Scruggs to life in prison.
