Judge Refuses To Postpone Child Abuse Trial of Former Penn State Football Coach
By Tony Romeo
BELLEFONTE, Pa. (CBS) -- It appears that the trial of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will start as scheduled two weeks from tomorrow.
The judge presiding over the case, in which Sandusky is accused of sexually abusing a boy, has denied a defense motion to delay the start of the trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 5th, in Centre County Court.
Sandusky's attorney most recently asked for a delay in a motion filed May 9th. In that motion, the defense argued that apart from some initial materials, the Commonwealth had not provided additional discovery materials until 200 pages were delivered on April 30th.
The defense also contended that it had not had an opportunity to review another slew of information delivered when the motion for a delay was filed on May 9th.
For that and other reasons, the defense contended, it would not have adequate time to prepare a defense.
But in a one-sentence ruling offering no explanation, the judge has denied the motion to delay the trial.
