Joel Embiid agrees to contract extension with Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid agreed to a multi-year contract extension Friday, keeping the 2022-2023 NBA MVP with the Sixers through 2029.
The Sixers did not release the terms of the contract extension, but the Associated Press reported that it is for three years and $193 million with a player option for the 2028-29 season.
Embiid broke the news on Instagram, calling Philly home.
"Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you've given me and my family," Embiid wrote. "There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we're just getting started!"
Drafted with the third overall pick in 2024, Embiid has developed into a superstar, making seven All-Star appearances, winning the MVP in 2022-23, being named to five All-NBA teams and winning back-to-back scoring titles (2021-22 and 2022-23). Embiid added a gold medal to his résumé with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Embiid has averaged 27.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 blocks in 433 games with the Sixers — the 27.9 scoring average ranks first in franchise history. Last season, Embiid scored a franchise-record 70 points against the San Antonio Spurs, one of his eight career 50-plus point games.
Last season, Embiid joined Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain as the only two players in NBA history to average at least 34 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists over any 39-game span. He finished averaging 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
"Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game," Sixers managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. "We're ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come."
Embiid joins point guard Tyrese Maxey as Sixers to sign a max contract extension this offseason. In July, the Sixers inked Maxey to a five-year, $204 million max extension.
Embiid and Maxey have a third star to play with this season after Philadelphia signed nine-time All-Star Paul George to a max contract in free agency.
The Sixers will open training camp in the Bahamas on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The season begins on Oct. 23 at home against the Milwaukee Bucks.
