PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some Philadelphia second-graders had an unforgettable morning today: Second Lady Jill Biden read to them from her new children's book.
(Jill Biden, reading: "Does Daddy really have to go?...")
The book, Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops, is about the Bidens' granddaughter and her experiences when her father, Beau Biden, was in Iraq with the Delaware National Guard.
Jill Biden told the Russ Byers and Bache-Martin students, listening to her read today at the Free Library of Philadelphia, that she wrote the book for all military families.
"If you feel sad, you know other kids feel just as sad as you do when your mom or your dad is away for a long time," she told them.
Second-grader Larry McKie, whose father recently returned from deployment, told Mrs. Biden he could relate:
"He went on an airplane and was skydiving and he said he was gonna come back in April, and I just felt a little sad because I didn't really see him a lot when he was in the military," he recalled. "But now I can."
"Now you can," Mrs. Biden replied.
Biden gave each student a copy of the book. Proceeds from the ones she sells will go to a scholarship fund for military kids.
