Jeremy Maclin Says Eagles Offense Will Resemble Patriots Offense
By Spike Eskin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Jeremy Maclin has spent all of an hour with Chip Kelly, but he likes what he hears.
After two disappointing seasons for Maclin, and for the Eagles, Kelly's arrival hopefully means renaissance for both.
"I think when you look at the skill sets that our receivers have, especially me and DeSean [Jackson] being the two guys that are out there most of the time, I think that's what we do best. I feel like the role that I was playing in the offense before, I feel like I really wasn't allowed to do that," Maclin told 94WIP's Michael Barkann and Ike Reese on Thursday. "I'm not saying that I wasn't happy with whatever they had me doing, I feel like my full skill set wasn't being utilized. Like I said, I'm looking forward to it. I think that you'll see pretty exciting plays from us this year. If I had to guess, I would think that it's something like the Patriots kind of do, getting Wes [Welker] and the tight ends in space and stuff like that, and letting them work a little bit. So, I'm looking forward to it."
Bill Belichick consulted Chip Kelly about offense, most notably how to run more plays per game. The Patriots scored more points than any team in the NFL in 2012, outscoring the next highest scoring team by 70 points. They had more passing yards than any other team, and were third in total yards.
"Just one thing, it's all about creating one on one match-ups," Maclin said of Kelly's offense. "Basically saying that my athletes are better than your athletes. Whichever way he decides to do that, whichever way he wants to do that, like I said, I'm looking forward to it. I really don't know how we're going to do that, but I think if you get all our athletes in space and let us go one-on-one, I think we'll be very successful."
The starting quarterback still isn't set in stone, as Kelly has said both Michael Vick and Nick Foles will compete for that spot.
"It could be one of those things to where they battle it out and they chose a guy," he said. "Or it could be one of those things where both of those guys see some time. Who knows? At this point all I wanna do is win, so which ever way the organization feels that we should go, that's the way we're gonna go. Obviously, both of those guys bring two different types of skill sets to the table. Mike Vick still has a bunch of years left of good football in him, so I'm looking forward to it."
