Jeffrey Lord: Republican Establishment Coming Around To Trump
Philadelphia (CBS) - Conservative author, commentator, and vocal supporter of Donald Trump, Jeffrey Lord, reacted to the presidential candidates impressive showing on 'Super Tuesday' and defended him against charges of racism following an endorsement by the KKK and Trump's sloppy manner in disavowing their allegiance.
During and interview with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Lord said the party elders are starting to come around to the idea he will be representing them in November's general election.
"He won seven of the primaries. He did very well. As you can tell from the panic that's testing the Republican establishment, they think he's going to win."
He responded to accusations that Trump is racist by claiming that Democrats spend more time focusing on racial politics than do Republicans.
"The Democratic party formed itself around race. It was and remains the party of race. It has, through the centuries, supported slavery, segregation, lynching, they were the Ku Klux Klan, and these days they're into racial quotas and illegal immigration by skin color. Everything is race, race, race, race, race. All it does, of course, is divide people. We are a long way from the 1960's when Martin Luther King talked about judging people by the content of their character and President Kennedy said America should be a place where race has no place in American life or law. The Constitution should be color blind, said Robert Kennedy. We're a long way from that."
Lord stated that he seriously doubts Republicans would unite behind a coalition of Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz to stop him from winning the nomination.
"I would be skeptical of that. The thing is, they don't like Ted Cruz either. That's the thing and he is the one that's emerging as the alternative here. If there's anybody they hate worse than Donald Trump it's Ted Cruz."
