Laptop Containing Jefferson Patient Information Stolen
Approximately 21,000 Thomas Jefferson University Hospital patients have been notified by the hospital that their identities have been compromised.
KYW's Michelle Durham reports that the victims' personal information, including social security numbers, are now in a stranger's possession.
President and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Thomas Lewis says they were notified on June 14th that an employee's laptop computer containing names, birth dates, gender, ethnicity, diagnosis, social security number, insurance information and hospital account numbers:
"Obviously the first reaction for something like this for me I was shocked...disappointed...obviously angry...but we moved on very quickly from that to try to figure out how we could do our best to mitigate any negative impact that this might have."
The hospital has contracted with a security firm to provide identity theft protection free of charge to affected patients -- that number is 1-877-309-0186.
