Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Taking Back, Not Giving It Back
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local newspaper carried mixed getaway messages last week, but let's see if we can sort it out.
My morning paper told me that the Washington Nationals don't want to see Phillies fans, or their money, at the Nationals' ball park (see related story).
Then, from the same paper falls a slick insert asking us to come to Washington, DC and, among other things, take in a Nationals game.
Oh-kayyy...
This tourism dustup reminded me that Washington may not be the home of the Braves, but it is the land of the free.
Free museums, including the sprawling Smithsonian. Numerous free concerts and festivals. Iconic monuments and historic walks -– all free.
And you don't even have to spend any money on lodging or dining in the dissin' District of Columbia. I'm partial to the Hyatt in nearby Crystal City, Va., right on a Metro line and close to Arlington Cemetery.
(Arlington, the resting place for generations of servicemen and women, offers an inspiring walk to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the gravesite of John F. Kennedy.)
The hotel, meanwhile, has a rooftop restaurant and grill with spectacular views of Washington.
And all without dropping a coin at the home of the Nationals!
