Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Spring Skiing in Pennsylvania
UPPER MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (CBS) - Winter hangs on with the tenacity of a bulldog -- at least at regional ski resorts.
This weekend may be the last chance for skiing diehards to make the last runs of the season.
They call it "spring skiing" -- the few weeks of the season when the snow softens, just before grass reclaims the slopes.
Longtime ski patroller Ellie Jessum finds it like icing on a cake.
"Nice sun, warm weather. You can go out there and get your tan," she says.
But where can you go in nearby Pennsylvania? Three resorts plan to be in operation this weekend, with snow on the mountain and a party atmosphere in the lodges.
Camelback, near Tannersville, will host spring skiing and a beach party in the lounge. Big Boulder is hoping the weather cooperates for a last spring skiing and riding bash. And Elk Mountain, high in the Endless Mountains, is planning to crank up the lifts for weekend day-skiing.
As skiers and riders know, Pennsylvania weather can be fickle, so check ahead before heading for the hills.
For those who want guarantees, there's always Jay Peak or Killington in Vermont. That's where the skiers disappear before the snow does. They'll be operating through April.
