Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Shady Maple
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sunny days and low gas prices are sparking getaway drives in the country.
The quest was for scrapple and sausage. Where else but Shady Maple? It's a massive Farm Market and Smorgasbord, the size of a European Duchy. The variety of sausage alone creates cravings.
"Made the old fashioned way - the old fashioned ingredients - that beautiful Pennsylvania Dutch Touch," said Lin Weaver, whose family opened this unique market over a half-century ago.
He boasts that scrapple is still the biggest seller. John and Mikey Jonkers travel here from North Jersey.
"It's 3 hours. It's so much fun up here," said Mikey.
"We stop here maybe 6 times a year," said John.
But it's the Smorgasbord that mirrors a cook-book of Pennsylvania Dutch treats that brings folks in by the bus load.
"It reminds you of going to your grandma's house," says Weaver.
And along the way find: nurseries, antiques and the beauty of Amish farmland.
