Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Scuba Diving Adventures in South Jersey
By Jay Lloyd
BRIELLE, N.J. (CBS) -- A getaway into an underwater world of pirates, shipwrecks, and naval battles is as close as the Jersey shore.
Gear up in a wetsuit and an oxygen tank and ship out of Brielle, NJ for an undersea adventure among the steel and wooden carcasses of once-sleek vessels.
"There are thousands of wrecks within a few miles of the shore," notes Jim Wood, the dive master aboard the Tuna Seazure, which takes six passenger-divers offshore to explore a vast graveyard of vessels sunk in storm and battle.
"There are submarines and tankers that were sunk during the Second World War," Wood tells KYW Newsradio. "There are sailing vessels from the 1700s."
Wood works out of Northeast Scuba Supply, in Montgomery County, Pa., with instructors who can get most reasonably fit people trained to dive. They'll provide rental equipment for anyone who wants to take the leap but isn't ready to make the investment.
A day on (and under) the water is about $100, and trained divers accompany scuba newbies into a fascinating world of nautical mystery.
