Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Longer Vacations In Bermuda
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Since the late '40s, one of the most popular island destinations for Philadelphians has been Bermuda, less than two hours away by jet.
And for retirees, Bermuda getaway options just got better.
Seasonal getaways are just that -– seasonal. But for those retired and wanting more than a vacation, Bermuda had been a problem.
American visitors had been allowed to stay only up to three weeks. Then, off we must go!
Last week, the Bermuda government bumped that limit up to 90 days. That's the same length of time that pink-sand seekers arriving and living on private boats have long enjoyed.
To stretch the Bermuda dollar as well as the visit, furnished apartment rentals will find a whole new customer base.
But there is a drawback. (Isn't there always?) Bermuda is one of the few tourism magnets on the face of the earth where visitors are not allowed to rent a car.
The island has crowded, narrow, winding roads, and Bermudians drive on the left. But scooters are available and there is public transport.
Best times of the year: spring and fall.
