Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Hyde Park, New York

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Without doubt, the dominant power couple of the 20th century was Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. KYW's Jay Lloyd enjoyed a getaway that offered memories of the times and an introduction to an iconic family.

Franklin and Eleanor were rich and powerful. But their lives were given to public service in the most perilous of times - World War II. For those who grew up in the 1940's like Paul Graubar, a visit to Hyde Park in New York can be dramatic.

"It stirs up a lot of emotions. And I come from a family that adored Roosevelt - that just worshiped him," said Graubar.

-----

The grounds at Hyde Park hold Eleanor and Franklin's gravesite, the family home and stables, America's first Presidential library and a fascinating museum of Roosevelt memorabilia including his Oval Office desk and a collection of gifts from world leaders. There's a fascinating multi-room display that traces significant national and global events during the Roosevelt era.

-----

The beautifully maintained estate has become a National Park in a picturesque Hudson Valley setting. Get there in a little over three hours.
