Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Hassle Reduced Getaway
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Record numbers of drivers have been on the roads during recent holiday getaways. This Christmas in not likely to be an exception, but there are some hassle reducing routes.
A straight line may be the shortest way between two points, if you like a lot of company. But avoiding turnpikes and freeways during peak holiday periods is certainly more relaxing and sometimes quicker.
Suppose you're heading south to the D.C. area. I-95 looks tempting, but navigating to 213 and 301 on the Maryland Eastern Shore with a stop at Chestertown for lunch, then over the Bay Bridge and straight to the capital is a lot more scenic and relaxing.
Going to the Metropolitan New York area. Do you really enjoy the New Jersey Turnpike? I like 202 to 22 with a stop at New Hope or Lambertville. Beats turnpike fast food, every time.
A western Pennsylvania destination? Shun the pike and pick up scenic route 30 with a stop in Dutch Country, then find a connecting road to your destination west of Harrisburg.
You get the idea. Use paper maps for the big picture and a map app for connections.
Enjoy the ride.
