Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Getting To New York City On The Cheap
By Jay Lloyd
NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBS) -- The anniversary this week of the September 11th terrorist attacks puts a renewed focus on New York City.
If you like really low fares to New York, especially to lower Manhattan, you're probably among the legions lamenting the shutdown of those accident-prone Chinatown buses (see related news stories).
But there are plenty of bus services to fill the low fare gap, including a new service operated by major carriers that goes right to New York's Chinatown -- just a healthy walk away from the 9/11 memorial.
Riders have taken to the new "Yo" bus. It leaves from the Arch Street bus terminal in Philadelphia, a block away from the Market East commuter station.
Buses between the Big Apple and the Big Scrapple have captured a booming ridership.
"You don't get much better than $10 one-way for a two-hour trip," one rider told me recently.
There are other familiar bus operations to New York at competitive prices. I've ridden Megabus, from 30th Street and JFK Boulevard, and Bolt, from the same location.
And for folks in Montgomery County, the Bieber bus from the Norristown Transportation Center (with $3/day parking) is still a bargain at $23 each way.
