Jay Lloyd's Getaway: 'Gathering of Warbirds' at WW II Weekend in Reading, Pa.
READING, Pa. (CBS) - The "Gathering of Warbirds" this weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, Pa. is one of the region's most enduring air shows. It runs all weekend and the focus is on the wild blue yonder of World War II.
The music of the era is the backdrop to this gathering of those prop-pushing fliers who cleared the skies over Europe and the Pacific before most of us living today were born.
The event this weekend brings together not only surviving GIs but the aircraft they flew and serviced. You'll watch the workhorse Flying Fortress, the B-29 Superfortress that ended the long road from Pearl Harbor, and a treasure trove of fighter and support aircraft.
How do the owners still keep these flying antiques airborne?
"They're like their own children," coordinator Dave Schott told me at a previous year's show. "They do constant maintenance on them. They have to do a certain thing with the FAA."
And for an extra fee, visitors will not only get to look but go for a ride into that Wild Blue Yonder of days gone by in one of these vintage aircraft.
