Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Fee Frustration
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- In case you haven't noticed, hotels and restaurants have been taking a page out of the airlines' playbook and are tacking on fees for what used to be free or included services.
You really don't notice at first. Then what looked like a reasonable price turns into something that requires a forensic accountant's skills.
That's when you get to the "facilities fee." This is a fee for things that had always been included, like a meal on a flight.
A fee of $65.00 slithered under the door for a recent three night New York stay. For that, you get WIFI service in a town where every hole-in-the-wall has free WIFI, phone calls for the few wretched travelers who don't have a cell phone, and a health club which was always part of the package.
You could try telling them you don't need those things. You could also try selling the Brooklyn Bridge.
Fortunately, not all hotels have gone on a fee spree. There'll be some where the price is the price. Book them. Then get on social media and vent. It won't change things, but you'll feel better.
