PERKIOMENVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- A fall ramble among changing leaves can be spiced up with stops at colorful country markets. It's a weekend getaway that can yield rare treasures.
The call of the auctioneer hints at the prospect of finding that once-in-a-lifetime collectible, or maybe something you just need around the house -- like an old typewriter to decorate a den.
There are two markets in the Montgomery County countryside that may seem helter-skelter but yield everything from Amish smoked meats to 50-cent tchotchkes.
Take a drive to the Monday sale at Perkiomenville off Route 29, along the colorful Perkiomen Creek, and Friday and Saturday sales at Zerns in Gilbertsville, Pa.
Some folks go there just to rekindle youthful memories.
"You see a lot of the stuff you had as a kid here," one visitor said.
Then there's fascinating people-watching and social chatter.
"It's not just buying stuff," he said. "You make friends and it's a weekend getaway."
A country market is more than a destination -- It's an experience. And close to home.
