Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Center City As A Vacation Destination
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If a special event brings you to center city Philadelphia, why not make a night and day of it? It could yield some additional fun, and some interesting shopping.
It was a joyous wedding that brought us to Philly from the suburbs. It was also a chance to stay overnight, enjoy a weekend stroll around town.
We made a visit to the Oyster House (1516 Sansom Street), and before leaving town we did some unique food shopping in Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market.
Chocolate purveyor Glen Mueller at the Reading Terminal Market notices an entirely different shopper on the weekends.
"They're very nice, fun customers. They're not in a rush," he notes.
Meuller's is where I stocked up on a variety of licorice treats.
Then there's Tommy DiNic, who feeds weekend shoppers his own variety of pork sandwiches.
----
"On the weekends, everyone's more relaxed -- they want to talk," DiNic says.
And chat we do before heading to Chinatown, the last stop on our visit, for live lobsters at sea floor prices.
----
A very laid-back Center City getaway. Give it a try!
