Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Caribbean Travel During Hurricane Season

Fall getaways to Bermuda and the Caribbean can easily be detoured by the wild winds of nature. KYW's Jay Lloyd offers a few tips.

By Jay Lloyd

This is my favorite time of year to head to Bermuda: no crowds, and great weather. Except when storms with names like a favorite aunt or uncle get in the way.

Having ridden out tropical storms and a hurricane in Bermuda, and having lost a house in St. Thomas to Hurricane Donna (1960), I can tell you they're no fun to be around.

But don't let that stop you from making plans, even bookings -– as long you're aware of cancellation or delay policies for your trip.

Many of the leading hotels in Bermuda, for instance, offer a hurricane guarantee that covers cancellation before the storm hits and ripping up the bill if you're already on the island when the winds arrive.  Check it out before booking.

Cruise lines are very conscious of storm concerns and will alter itineraries while advising passengers in advance via constant alerts on their web pages.

And, of course, there's always travel insurance.  Just make sure your policy covers the big blow.
