Jay Lloyd's Getaway: An Unbelievable Travel Deal

On a recent New York City getaway, Jay Lloyd found a deal that strains the imagination.

I've reported before on a quartet of bus companies that charge about $20 roundtrip to go between Philadelphia and New York City. It couldn't get better than that. Clean, comfortable buses that ran on time.

But it did get better.

Doing research for another story on buses, I noticed a box in the upper right-hand corner of the Megabus web site that was offering free trips. You can guess what I thought.

But then it came time to make reservations. I knew the times I wanted to travel, and so I played along and copied down the promotion codes.

When I pulled up the Megabus schedule for my travel days, I found it hard to believe: there were indeed free seats! And others for between $1 and $7.

Still skeptical, I booked two and printed the tickets.

When the day came, we arrived at the 30th Street bus stop, boarded, and traveled. Free.

Well, not exactly. They charged a 50-cent booking fee. Still, it was round trip for two people for half a buck.
Go to us.megabus.com and hope for the best. The near-free seats are extremely limited. But if you get 'em, what a deal.
