Jay Lloyd's Getaway: A Place Called Dumbo
by KYW's Jay Lloyd
New Yorkers have a habit of applying acronyms to their neighborhoods. There's Soho ("South of Houston St.") and Noho ("North of Houston") and Tribeca ("Triangle Below Canal St.").
But on any Big Apple getaway, you have to see Dumbo!
"Dumbo is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It's not a flying elephant."
That's Jeffrey Rodman, who owns the Water Street Restaurant on the Brooklyn waterfront, between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges -- Dumbo.
And Rodman points out that the views are spectacular: "You can see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, all of Wall Street."
Magnificent views, great food, boutique shopping, and a very short subway ride to Manhattan (or a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge).
Once just warehouses and docks, Dumbo is now a very changed neighborhood, as Ken Goto, who operates Jaques Torres Chocolatier, found out.
"I was very skeptical anyone would come here. But now it's a hip, very popular area," he says.
And it's the only place I know where normally impatient New Yorkers will wait in line over an hour to get into a pizzeria (below).
