CAPE MAY, N.J. (CBS) -- This week, one year ago, we woke, stunned at the devastation created by Superstorm Sandy at some of our favorite seashore retreats. This weekend will see a bumper crop of fall visitors.
Cape May dodged the damage inflicted on more easterly facing shore towns and sprang back to life sooner. This weekend, the annual arts and crafts festival, plus the brilliant fall weather, is luring many of the regulars back to town for Victorian themed activities, and as hotel operator John Cooke notes, visitors can enjoy the natural vibrancy of the Cape.
"Take in the natural beauty of Cape May. It's free," Cooke says. "They can take a walk on the promenade. They can go sit on a birding platform at Cape May Point. They can go for a horse and buggy ride on the weekend."
For a getaway seeker, a last stroll on the beach as fall bites the air is a reminder that Sandy won't be forgotten, but the natural environment here at the Cape is the past, present and future.
