Jay Lloyd's Getaway: A Casual Day of Fun Afloat and Good Food

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. (CBS) - How about a quick and easy adventure on the water, in a pristine environment with a tiki-bar atmosphere, and so close to home that some of us can walk there?

Story continues below...

Fitzwater Station, just outside Phoenixville (Chester County), is a historic tavern that sports a sun-splashed deck with colorful umbrellas and a stunning view of the Schuylkill Canal, where canoes and kayaks are available for an easy paddle down the canal and back on the river.

"Going down in this section, it's almost like being somewhere else in the wilderness," says John Pearson, who operates Fitzwater Station.

As turtles swim among the ducks and geese here, he launches canoes into a local version of a Lewis-and-Clark expedition.

"Even though there's civilization behind the trees that you're looking at, you don't see this stuff," he notes. "You could be anywhere."

Just the wildlife, the sounds of birds, and the dip of paddles.

You can push off from the restaurant, then make a loop back for a cool drink and a perfectly done basket of fish and chips.  On Sundays there's even music in the grove.
