Japanese Carmakers Recall 3.4M Vehicles For Defective Airbag
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Four carmakers are recalling 3.4 million vehicles due the risk of airbags catching fire.
According to Reuters, four Japanese automakers - Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda - are recalling cars sold around the world because of airbags made by Takata Corp.
Officials at Toyota, Honda and Nissan said no injuries or deaths have been reported due to the airbag risk.
Officials say this is the largest recall for Takata since 1995 involving defective seatbelts.
A Takata spokesperson said some non-Japanese automakers have also been supplied with the defective airbags, but did not name them.
Takata Corp. said the front passenger seat airbags may not inflate in an accident because of a manufacturing defect in the propellant, causing a risk of fires or injury.
All vehicles that may have the defective airbags were made in or after 2000; The faulty airbags were manufactured between 2000 and 2002.
