IRS Move From NE Phila. to 30th St. is Proceeding
The Philadelphia office of the Internal Revenue Service is now moving thousands of employees from one service center to another.
KYW's Lynne Adkins reports that about 5,000 IRS employees are moving from five buildings on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia to the former main post office at 30th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia (above).
IRS spokesman Chris Kerns says it makes sense for them:
"IRS has had a process where all of our service centers or campuses around the country -- and there are 10 of them -- are old. They were built in the '50s and early '60s, (so) we had to renovate the old buildings or find new locations."
Some employees are already shifting to the new site, but it will take months to complete the move. The government leased the old buildings and is doing the same with the new one.
Kerns says the new building will not be open to the public -- it's strictly a service center handling phone calls and mail.
