Irish Memorial Fundraiser Run Is Saturday In Fairmount Park
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 5K run to raise money to maintain Philadelphia's Irish Memorial takes place this Saturday along the Schuylkill River.
It's the fifth year the Irish Memorial 5K is being held. It helps raise funds to maintain the bronze memorial to Irish immigration that's been at Front and Chestnut Streets since 2003.
Money also goes for the upkeep of the park surrounding the giant statue.
"We have the constant upkeep of that," notes Kathleen Sullivan, president of the Irish Memorial board. "We have been pretty fortunate, but you have the elements and you have to clean it to maintain it, to maintain the patina. It's something very beautiful and you have to keep it beautiful. Without the contributions this would not be possible."
You can register online for the 5K, or in person on race day at 8am at Lloyd Hall, 1 Boathouse Row, along Kelly Drive. The race starts at 9 o'clock.
