Upper Darby Man Pulled Off Ireland-Bound Flight, Charged In Hit-Run

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- A 28-year-old Upper Darby man is under arrest, charged with a hit-and-run accident last week that put a woman in the hospital.

The suspect was taken into custody on board a plane about to take off from JFK Airport in New York for his native Ireland.

The accident victim, 32-year-old Jaime Timlin, was literally knocked out of her shoes  while walking late on the night of February 2nd along Cedar Lane in Upper Darby.  She remains hospitalized in serious condition with injuries to her head, brain, and hips.

Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood says police got an anonymous tip that led them to their suspect, Damian Crossan.

"We tracked him down through ICE (US Deparment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and learned that he was due to take a flight to Ireland," Chitwood told KYW Newsradio.

Chitwood said Crossan had purchased a one-way ticket.

Homeland security removed Crossan from the plane as it prepared to depart  from Kennedy airport on Wednesday night.  Detectives also retrieved Crossan's pickup truck -- with front-end damage -- from the long-term parking lot.  Authorities say he admitted hitting the woman.

Crossan has waived extradition and is now back in Delaware County, facing charges including careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
