iPhone Glitch Gobbling Up Some Users' Cell Data Quotas

By Ian Bush

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you have an iPhone, you might do well to check how much data your device is eating up.  A software glitch appears to be behind a rude awakening for some users.

The issue has been reported among those who have the iPhone 5 or who have upgraded their older devices to iOS 6.

"Something is wrong, and they're seeing enormously high data consumption," says Glenn Fleishmann, an editor at the Mac web site Tidbits.com.

Fleishmann says the bug is racking up data on the user's cellular plan even when he or she is logged into a WiFi hotspot.

"They're not actively doing something like streaming a movie or downloading files," he tells KYW Newsradio, "and they come back and find that hundreds of megabytes or gigabytes were used at a time when the phone was basically inactive."

Calls to AT&T and Sprint about what's going on were not immediately returned.  There's a software update for Verizon customers in the iPhone's settings menu: tap General, then About.
