In Boston, Red Sox Fans Ponder What Might Have Been
BOSTON, Mass. (CBS) - As the Phillies head into the post-season (see related story), there is misery and despair in Boston, where Red Sox fans are trying to come to grips with their once mighty team's epic late-season collapse.
And now, Boston police might need extra patrols on the Tobin Bridge to keep Red Sox fans from jumping off.
"Without the Red Sox in the playoffs, it's as if the city of Boston has come to a halt," says Rod Fritz, a news anchor at our sister radio station, WBZ. He says he was mystified after the Sox completed an unexplainable final-month freefall that saw them blow a nine-game Wild Card lead.
"How can you not win two games in a row in September when you're in the race for the playoffs?" he asks rhetorically.
Fritz notes that after the Red Sox signed Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, the preseason favorites were the Sox and Phils.
"We were supposed to play the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. We're not playing anyone."
And as the Phils head into the postseason, Fritz says Red Sox fans will be saying, "Let's go Bruins."
