Immaculata's Mighty Macs Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of First Championship
By John McDevitt
IMMACULATA, Pa. (CBS) - Immaculata University on the Mainline is getting ready to celebrate the 40th Anniversary (next Monday) of the first Mighty Macs National College Women's basketball championship.
One of the members of Immaculata College's National Championship teams from the 70's, Denise Conway-Crawford, was a Mighty Mac.
"You know when we went out to play basketball it was really for the love of the game. And, I think sometimes girls play today -- and the boys too -- to see what kind of money they can get for college education, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different than we approached it in the 70s."
Judy Marra-Martelli says she and her teammates had no idea were raising the profile for women's college sports.
"It was such an amazing time for us and an amazing feet. I didn't realize it at the time, but you know, as time goes on and you look back you realize what we did accomplish back then and it should be celebrated."
And celebrating is what Judy hopes to do for the upcoming NCAA tournament. She'll be rooting for St. Joes and for head coach and husband, Phil Martelli.
