A 33-year-old woman was killed in a crash with New Castle County paramedics that shut down I-95 in Delaware on Wednesday, police said.

The crash happened before 3 a.m. on the southbound side of the interstate, near where it splits for I-495.

Two paramedics were in a Ford emergency vehicle and activated their emergency lights en route to the scene of a different crash on the shoulder of the highway.

As they began changing lanes to get over to the shoulder, the medics crashed into a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by Kierra West of Newark, Delaware, according to police.

The crash sent the Nissan onto the shoulder, and the paramedic vehicle stopped on the highway.

West was pronounced dead on the scene and a passenger in her vehicle, a six-year-old child, was taken to Nemours Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two paramedic personnel were injured but listed in stable condition at Christiana Hospital.
