Hurricane Sandy Plays Too Rough With Camden Children's Garden
By Pat Loeb
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- One place that's still digging out from Hurricane Sandy is the Camden Children's Garden, where the storm brought down half a dozen trees.
Parents with babies have enjoyed the shade from the tall, mature willows in the garden. But they made a bit of a mess when they toppled over from Sandy's high winds.
Some trees crashed down onto exhibits, and executive director Mike Devlin says a couple are hanging precariously over the garden's popular Butterfly House.
"We're going to have to hire a tree surgeon to work on it because we don't feel quite competent and confident to take it down," he told KYW Newsradio.
Devlin says the staff will be working through the week so the Children's Garden can reopen on Saturday. He says new trees will be planted soon, and the downed trees will be mulched for use by other Camden community gardens.
"It's a shame to lose them, but they'll go back into nature," Devlin muses.
