Hurricane Relief Vehicles Will Not Pay AC Expressway Tolls
By Mike DeNardo
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS) -- Companies heading to the Jersey Shore to help with the hurricane relief effort are getting a free ride on the Atlantic City Expressway.
For the time being, Atlantic City Expressway tolls are NOT being charged for vehicles heading to the shore to help with the recovery after Hurricane Sandy. South Jersey Transportation Authority Executive Director Sam Donelson says drivers of electric utility trucks, tree trimmers, the Red Cross and other vehicles -- instead of using E-ZPass -- should head to a toll collector, who will wave hurricane service vehicles through.
"Although some people may be part of a relief agency and be in their personal vehicle, there's no way to verify that. So we need people to be in clearly marked company vehicles, and identify themselves as part of this relief effort," Donelson says.
Donelson also adds that the authority doesn't consider free tolls for relief vehicles as lost revenue, because he says if it weren't for the hurricane, those vehicles wouldn't have been going to the shore in the first place.
