Hurricane Danny Reaches Major Hurricane Status
By Steven Strouss
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After a slow start to the Atlantic Hurricane season, the tropics are heating up. Hurricane Danny has reached major Hurricane status (Category 3) with wind speeds of 115 mph and gusts to 140 mph. The storm is located about 800 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving WNW at 10 mph.
The storm is moving into an area of unfavorable winds which will likely weaken the system. Danny is an unusually small hurricane with tropical storm force winds extending just 60 miles from the center. That's about the width of the state of New Jersey.
The slow start and hopefully quiet 2015 hurricane season can be attributed to a developing El Nino which typically causes strong wind shear over the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, dry air and persistent trade winds have also limited tropical activity so far this season.
Hurricane Danny doesn't currently pose a threat to the US East coast however it could bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands early next week.
If you are heading to the NJ or DE beaches this weekend you can expect mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s. If Danny spins close to the coast later next week, rip currents will become a concern. We will continue to monitor the progress of the hurricane as it spins closer and keep you updated of any dangers.
