Hundreds Of Cyclists Take Part In 41st Annual American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Several hundred cyclists took part in the 41st annual American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon on Sunday which began in Philadelphia and finished 65 miles away in Buena Vista, New Jersey.
The American Cancer Society points out that this event is not a race. Instead, they call it a ride that in its history has raised over $1-million for cancer research and education. It began with just 3-cyclists, and on Sunday, more than 40 years later, there were hundreds.
"We hope to have a safe ride, a fun day," said Colleen Fitzwater, American Cancer Society Vice President. "But the main purpose here is to raise money for the mission of the American Cancer Society. It's our hundredth birthday this year and we want to make sure that this money is going to help finish the fight against cancer this century.
Mark Fineman of Bucks County, a 38-year cancer survivor, was at the event and offered some advice.
"The most important thing is to be aware of your body," said Fineman. "The things we may take for granted, little, subtle changes, don't ignore them, get them checked out."
The event began at the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge and ended hours later in Buena Vista with a ceremony and lunch.
