PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds gathered at Penn's Landing to ring in the New Year a little bit early. The first of two fireworks shows that's become a family tradition for many.
"We come up every year. We go skating and we go watch fireworks with our nieces, sister-in-law, brother so we come to watch with them," a reveler said.
New Year's Eve in Philadelphia means two fireworks shows. One to officially ring in 2014 at midnight and a 6 p.m. display that brought in a lot of families.
Five-year-old Sophia and hundreds more celebrating on the ice at the River Rink and looking on in front of the Delaware River. This early show brings out the kids and the kids at heart.
"It was awesome because I got to spend it with family and friends. It was the last day of 2013," another reveler said.
And to Mario, a lifelong Philadelphian, there's no other place he would rather be.
"We definitely have it all. Nobody celebrates New Year's like we do," Mario said.
Tuesday night, a dazzling display lighting up the sky. And if you could see flashes up above, you'd easily find an event down below.
From the traditional skating at Penn's Landing -- to a mega dance party for kids at Adventure Aquarium.
The Battleship New Jersey hosted its own late night event, and a chance for something unique.
"Our kids absolutely love the battleship and naval history. They absolutely enjoy it."
"It's my first battleship that I've ever been on."
Elijah Willie and his siblings are one of a few families actually spending the night on the ship, because of Dad Frank, who says the first thing for 2014: learn something.
"I wanted something different for my children. Which is these guys back here. I thought of this and that's why we're here," he said.
Bobby from Williamstown, New Jersey was marking his first New Year's Eve in Philadelphia. Grateful for the year that was, and hopeful for the days ahead.
"We're starting to start a fresh new year on a good note. We've got a new grandbaby on the way, due within a week," Bobby said.
"I love it. I love the crowds, I love the people. It's almost like you're in a sports arena and you get a team feel and the atmosphere," another reveler said.
And no matter what language you speak.
"Feliz Ano Nuevo!"
A time to turn the page to 2014.
"Happy New Year!"
