Huge Turnout For Canine Fashion Show And PAWS Fundraiser At FDR Park
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia's largest rescue organization and only no-kill shelter, held its 5th Annual Mutt Strut in South Philadelphia Sunday morning.
Hundreds of dogs clad in colorful costumes strutted their stuff during a one-and-a-half mile dog walk around FDR Park. The popular pooch parade attracted more than 1500 visitors last year and is apart of PAWS' effort to save the thousands of abandoned and unwanted animals in Philadelphia.
Melissa Levy is the group's executive director. She says the event is PAWS' biggest fundraiser and enables to organization to save lives.
"Their life depends on people coming forward to adopt, to foster, to donate and to volunteer to help save them."
Levy says the day is a chance for pet owners to have fun with their best friend. There's an obstacle course, a vet booth and a costume contest.
"Homer's a frog today," says one pet-owner (photo).
"This is Molly, a four month old boxer," says Tim Hess. "She's supposed to be a shark, but she looks like shark bait."
And does Hess think his little molly will win?
"Yeah, because she's so cute. She looks cute in her costume and everybody loves her.
In addition to information booths, dozens of dogs are up for adoption.
