Huge Heroin Haul In NE Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police and the FBI have made one of the largest heroin seizures in local history, in the Crescentville section of the Lower Northeast.

Chief inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia PD's narcotics unit says they were tipped off that a home-invasion robbery was in the works.

"The police and the FBI were able to prevent this home invasion robbery from occurring," he said, leading to the drug seizure.

They arrested the first person, who allegedly had a stolen gun, a machete, duct tape, masks, and gloves.
Then, after monitoring the home, authorities served a search warrant and took in three people, all Dominican nationals.

"We were able to confiscate a little over 5,000 grams of heroin," Small said. "It has a street value of $1.7 million."

They also seized vehicles and cash.  An x-ray of one of the vehicles led to another 1,000 grams of heroin in a door panel.  The street value of the total seizure is $2.3 million.

Small says the drugs would normally be broken down into $10 baggies.  That's more than 100,000 drug transactions that won't be taking place.
