Howie Roseman Talks About Eagles Draft On Sportsradio 94WIP
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman joined Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow Monday on Sportsradio 94WIP to talk about the 2013 Eagles draft class.
On the Eagles fourth round draft pick, QB, Matt Barkley:
Really, the moment was after we took Bennie [Logan] and you get a couple picks after it, after you speak to the player and kind of go through what happens when you make a pick which is a little bit of a process. For us, we stared at our top 50 and there was only one player left, and that was Matt Barkley. So we actually tried to get back up, and I don't know if we talked about this yet, but we tried to get back up on Friday night into the third round and get him then. This wasn't a case where we kind of looked at our board Friday night or Saturday morning and said let's do this now. We were trying to do this Friday night.
On the Eagles second round draft pick, TE, Zach Ertz:
He was our guy, there is no question about that. Just such a unique skill set when you talk about mismatches, versatile players, and size, and athletic ability, and character, and intelligence. Obviously he's got to prove it at this level, but when you just talk about him in college football and the things he can do on the field----and we were the same way, wondering what Jacksonville was going to do. We were concerned about it and feel fortunate to get him.
On draft process with Chip Kelly:
What was easy about the process was, we had done a lot of work on these guys from May until coach [Kelly] got here and when we first sat down with coach and talked to him about our draft board and discussed the players we liked, he knew a lot of them and he had strong opinions on them. So when you talk about something like Matt Barkley being there in the third round and you turn to him [Kelly] when he's sitting next to you and you say, 'Let's go get Matt Barkley' and he goes, 'Well I know all about Matt. I recruited him, I played against him, I've seen him throw in pregame, I've seen him throw in key situations, I've seen him under pressure'. It was the same way for all these other guys.
Just having him around and having his experience with these guys, and the background with these guys, was certainly a huge plus for us.
On current quarterback situation:
We want to keep them. We've said it since day one this off-season. We really like our quarterback situation. Getting Matt [Barkley] there was the value of the player. It wasn't any indictment on anyone on our roster and we're excited to see all of those guys on the field.
If you look around the league, at the 31 other teams, most teams have four or five quarterbacks on their roster right now. With the 90-man roster, that's what most teams are going to carry as you're going into camp, and then it will whittle its way down as you put together a final roster. So our numbers aren't out of the norm, it just may be a little bit more high profile when you look at our depth chart, than other teams---if that makes any sense.
